Our next workshop,”Alternative Careers: Industry” is next Wednesday, October 22nd, at 20:00 BTR.

Our speaker is Dr. Bruna Paulsen, director of manufacturing and quality control (QC) at Gameto, a company that aims to improve women’s reproductive health through novel and innovative therapeutics. Dr. Bruna will share with us her transition journey from academia to industry. Please find her bio attached.

This workshop will be moderated by the scholars Camila Souza, Dalmo Monteiro, Guilherme Santana, and Mateus Tavares, mentees of Jessica Santana.

In this workshop, we will have Antonios Henriques, Founder and CEO of Momentum Therapeutics.

Antonio Henriques is a Brazilian entrepreneur and business leader with a strong background in biotechnology and life sciences. He is currently the Co-Founder & CEO of Momentum Therapeutics, a biotech venture he launched in 2024, and serves as Founding Member and Co-President of BALSA (Brazilian Association for Life Sciences in America). Antonio’s career spans over three years in business development and alliance management within the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. He previously worked at Amgen as a Business Development and Alliance Management Senior Manager, where he led strategic partnerships, including a major agreement with Daiichi Sankyo to commercialize biosimilars in Japan. Before that, he was Associate Director of Business Development at Exelixis in the San Francisco Bay Area. His entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond his companies. Antonio serves as Regional Director for the Bay Area chapter of the HBS Healthcare Alumni Association, where he helps connect healthcare professionals and alumni worldwide. Antonio holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was VP of the Pharma/Biotech Healthcare Club and won second place in the Grand Business Challenge in Digital Health. He also earned a Master’s degree in Economics of Science and Innovation from Barcelona School of Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil, with an international exchange at the University of Leeds in Biotechnology. As a fellow Brazilian who has built a career across multiple continents, Antonio brings valuable insights into entrepreneurship, career development in life sciences, and navigating international opportunities in the biotech industry.

Science Communication Workshop, September 17 @ 19:00 BRT

This is a gentle reminder that our next YPMP 2025 Workshop Series, “Science Communication,” is tomorrow, September 17th , at 19:00 BRT.

In this workshop, we will have Daniel Dahis, clinical development scientist at Philips. Beyond being a scientist, Daniel has been developing a wonderful job communicating science to broad audiences through social media platforms, reaching more than 350,000 followers (bio attached).

The workshop will feature a roundtable discussion moderated by scholars Gabriel, Leonardo, Ruam, and Ugo, who are mentees of Tim Cox.

Choosing a Mentor and a Work Environment

In this workshop, we will have Dr. Amber Alhadeff. Dr. Alhadeff earned a PhD in Psychology (please find her bio attached) and will be discussing the importance of choosing a mentor and a healthy working environment. This workshop will be moderated by the students Ana Julia de Melo, Geovanna Amaro, Itallo Augusto, Geovana Almeida and Rafaela Menezes, mentees from Bruna Genisa.

Workshop Series: Writing a personal statement

We are pleased to invite you to our next YPMP 2025 Workshop Series titled: “Writing a personal statement”, on TOMORROW, June 18th, from 19:00 to 20:30 BRT.

In this workshop, we will have Dr. Cindy Leiton, Development Program Manager at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and independent Strategy Consultant at Yale University in the Escobar-Hoyos laboratory (you can find her bio attached). Dr. Leiton has vast experience working with students on their statements of purpose and graduate school applications.

📢 ATTENTION: This is going to be a practical workshop. That means you will have some “homework” before our meeting. Please find attached the agenda of planned activities for the workshop and a PDF file containing an example of a personal statement. Please read the personal statement before the workshop (this reading is mandatory). To get the most out of this workshop, we encourage you to access the links available in the first table of the agenda and read page 2. Finish this work by answering the questions on pages 3, 4 and 5. While you are not required to send the completed exercises to us, it would be very important that you finish all the assignments to be able to take advantage of this workshop!

In this workshop, we will have Dr. Darin Latimore, deputy dean for diversity and inclusion, and chief diversity officer at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Latimore has extensive experience working with early investigators and early-career scientists, with a focus on impostor syndrome. You can find his bio attached.

Cientifico Latino Graduate School Mentorship Program

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share an exciting opportunity that might be of interest to those considering graduate school (Master’s or PhD) in the US or Europe.

This one-on-one mentorship program is currently open for applications until May 31st. The program focuses on key aspects of the application process, including reviews of personal statements, CVs, and mock interviews. It’s a great chance to receive personalized guidance.

Additionally, they offer application fee waivers, which can be great to help reduce costs throughout the process. If you’re planning to apply for graduate programs, we highly encourage you to check it out!

It is our pleasure to invite you to our next YPMP 2025 Workshop Series titled: “Enhancing your presentation skills”, on April 16th, from 19:00 to 20:30 (Brasilia time).

In this workshop, we will have Dr. Matthew Carter, professor in the Biology Department at Williams College and Author of Designing Science Presentations: A Visual Guide to Figures, Papers, Slides, Posters, and More. Matt has been teaching scientists how to effectively design presentations, posters, and much more for several years. You can find more about him in the bio attached.

🚨Attention: This is going to be a practical workshop! That means you will have some “homework” before our meeting. We would like you to prepare one slide containing the graphical abstract of your main research question - imagine that you will present a brief overview of the “big picture” of your project for a lay audience. How would you prepare this information interestingly and easily for everyone to capture your work’s essence? Once you are done, send this slide to the email of Iniciativa Proxima with the following heading “Pre-Workshop presentation skills_Your name”. The deadline for sending us the homework is noon (EST) on Wednesday, April 16th. After the workshop, you will revisit your slide and apply the new concepts you learned to re-do your slide. The deadline to send the makeover slide is noon (EST) on Wednesday, April 23rd. Please save the new one as “Post-Workshop presentation skills_Your name”. We encourage you to complete these activities and meet with other associates to discuss what should be changed in your presentation.

In case you cannot attend, please let us know by email. The talk will be recorded, and we will share it with all members afterward. As a reminder, you are expected to attend 85% of our proposed activities, otherwise, you will not receive a certificate by the end of the program.

We are bringing exciting news! 🎉🎉 Our program will start next Wednesday, March 12 with our very first workshop. ✨ Therefore, it is our pleasure to invite you to our very first workshop of this year, called Program Introduction: Goals and Expectations on March 12th, 7:00 PM EST (20:00 BRT).

In this workshop, we will introduce each other and give an overview of the program, including mentorship meetings, career development sessions, and workshops. Also, we will cover what to expect and what is expected from students throughout the year. This will be a great opportunity to get to know your peers and our team better, your participation is mandatory. This workshop will be in Portuguese and it is expected to last around 1h30 minutes.
